Irvinestown Tennis Club had plenty to cheer about at the weekend when Club stalwart Kathleen Maguire won the Over-70s Ladies Singles title at the Irish Indoor Championships.
In the final she started off very nervous, and duly lost it 0-6. However, in set two Kathleen started to find her rhythm and consistency and showed her true self by winning it 7-5.
And the Championship tie-break saw her pull away to a 10-5 victory and claim the coveted Irish title.
In the Over-40s Ladies Doubles, Donna McSorley claimed the title when she partnered with Julie McManus from Belfast. They defeated the number-one seeds to lift the title and this was a tremendous victory for Donna after months out with injury.
Finally, club coach Nikie Hawkes, on her Veterans debut, came runner-up in the Ladies’ Over-30s Singles, losing narrowly in the Championship tie-break.
The club also congratulates Matthew McGann, a life member, for reaching the Mens’ 45s Doubles final.
Well done to all and to those who competed from all the Western local clubs.
