Portora RS 1st XV 20
Grosvenor GS 1st XV 7
In the last ever game for the 1st XV as Portora Royal School, the Enniskillen school got their hands on silverware as they produced a fine performance to lift the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Bowl with a comprehensive 20-7 win over Grosvenor Grammar School at Dungannon Royal School yesterday.
Portora took control of things in the first half as they went in at half time with a 12-0 advantage.
And they added to that in the second half as a penalty and an unconverted try pushed them into a 20-0 lead. Although Grosvenor recorded a late converted try, this was only a consolation as Portora deservedly took the victory.
Portora captain Josh Kennedy was understandably delighted with the win.
“It is a fantastic result and it is just reward for all the hard work that has gone in. To be able to perform on the big day was a telling factor and it is nice to finish up as Portora with a win like this,” he said.
Portora started the game well and they went on to grab an early advantage as Ryan Egerton touched down after the Enniskillen side had been camped on the Grosvenor line.
Conor Keys kicked the conversion to put Portora into a 7-0 lead.
Despite playing into the wind in the first half, Portora were to go on and add to their lead as the ball was moved out wide and full back Robert Baloucoume raced over. Although the conversion was unsuccessful, Portora went in with a 12-0 lead at half time.
The majority of the second half was played in the Grosvenor half and Keys landed a penalty five minutes after the restart to stretch the gap to 15 points.
The Portora pressure continued and Jack Rutledge went over for their third try to make it 20-0.
With Portora having emptied the bench, Grosvenor registered a late converted try but it was Portora’s day as they finished up 20-7 winners.
