ENNISKILLEN Rotary Club celebrated International Women’s Day with a breakfast event at the Killyhevlin Hotel, Enniskillen, yesterday morning, Wednesday.

Enniskillen Rotary President, Kenny Fisher, on behalf of the Club and in particular its ladies, extended a welcome to the gathering, attended by Rotarians and guests, and thanked people for supporting the breakfast.

The speakers included Bridie Sweeney of the Aisling Centre, who spoke about the services provided by the Aisling Centre; Enniskillen Rotarian Siobhan O’Reilly spoke on the International Women’s Day theme, ‘Be Bold For Change,’ and Enniskillen Rotarian Heather Ellis spoke about women in Rotary.

Mr. Fisher, who also addressed the breakfast, mentioned that there were events going on throughout the world yesterday “to recognise the role of women in society.”

He pointed out that in fact in some countries it is an official holiday, and he explained it also has the equivalent status of Mother’s Day where children give presents to their mothers.

“Women are now taking a greater part in business life and also in political life. Women are beginning to be treated more as equals with men however they are still not on equal pay in many jobs. It is only in recent years that women became Rotarians in our Club, now they are playing a big part in what goes on in the Club, as can be seen here this morning.”

All the speakers were thanked for their contributions yesterday morning by Mr. Fisher. He acknowledged: “We have all heard about the great range of services.”

He highlighted that “mental health is also a big issue in the county at present” and he believes “it is great to have these services locally.”

Finally, Mr. Fisher extended thanks to David Morrison and the staff of the Killyhevlin Hotel for providing an excellent breakfast, and thanked Enniskillen Rotarian Jenny McCrea and the ladies of the Club for organising the event.
