PHOTOGRAPHER Tom Gilroy is forever inspired by his rural home of Boho, capturing the mystical landscapes and dramatic natural features of the area.

Sharing his striking photographs on his social media pages, Tom takes great pleasure in encouraging others to embrace the beauty on their doorstep.

Here he speaks to The Impartial Reporter about his background in photography, how he would describe his style, and his favourite subject matter.

What is your background in photography?

PHOTOGRAPHY is something I’ve always had an interest in, but I only started to take it more seriously about three years ago when I bought myself a camera.

Once my confidence grew, I set up my Facebook page – Tom Gilroy Photography – and I found that, through it, I was getting commissioned for private functions and freelance work.

Are you self-taught or did you do a course in photography?

IN THE beginning, I was self-taught. I spent a lot of time studying other photographers, focusing on their style, analysing their set-up and paying attention to their landscape shots.

This helped me discover what I needed to do to take a good picture, and this developed my confidence and own style.

I enrolled on a photography course and have achieved a level two qualification. Once Covid has settled, I hope to enrol in a course to further develop my knowledge.

What inspires your photography?

MY LOCAL area of Boho has inspired me more than anything else. I find its unspoilt, natural beauty very special and unique.

Boho is full of wonderful, uncovered hidden treasures, and I find this very appealing. I love showing people the beauty on their doorstep.

What type of camera equipment do you use?

I USE a Canon D1300 and various different lenses and tripods depending on the type of shot I’m looking to get.

I also use lens balls in some of my shots to add a deeper dimension to the picture.

How would you describe your photography style?

MY MAIN style would be landscape, but I do like to experiment with other styles and add props to the shot to give it more of a focal point.

What is your favourite photograph, to date?

MY FAVOURITE photograph is the misty shot of the lone house here in Boho. I just love the eeriness of the mist, contrasting with the clearness of the mountains of Boho.

What is your favourite subject matter and why?

IT WILL come as no surprise when I say that my favourite subject matter is Boho. Every time I go out with the camera I find another hidden gem!
