A TALENTED Fermanagh teenager has landed herself a place on the University of Cambridge Summer school scheme.
Laura Mc Caffrey (16), from Kinawleym won her place at the prestigious school as part of an international competition that was open to children all around the world.
Laura will spend two weeks in Cambridge (subject to Covid-19 regulations), where she will have a more intensive look at her subject of choice, Medicine.
The Mount Lourdes Grammar School student is currently studying for her GCSEs and spoke to The Impartial Reporter about her experience of applying for the scheme.
She wrote an essay for admissions under the title, 'What makes a good doctor'.
Of this role, Laura said: "It is definitely a balancing act between empathy and being objective about getting it done."
Laura then used the metaphor of a multi-layered onion to prove her point.
She is looking forward to seeing demonstrations and dissections up close. She said: "I'm getting a taster of what medicine will really be like, and getting to see actual bodies." She is also looking forward to learning from tutors from University of Cambridge.
When Laura finishes school, she wants to work in a caring profession, as she is a carer to her twin brothers, Aaron and Darragh (19), who both have autism and learning difficulties.
She said: "I always wanted something in the caring role; it was a natural progression."
