There has been widespread shock and condemnation following the decision by the Department of Education to close St. Mary’s High School, Brollagh (pictured).

The west Fermanagh school has had four attempted closures since 2008 and an attempt had been made to transform it into an Integrated school to try and stave off the closure.

However, in the end, the Education Minister, Peter Weir, decided transformation to an Integrated school was not justified and approved on closure with a date set for August 2021.

The Save St. Mary’s Action Group has been to the forefront of the drive to keep the school running and Frank Maguire, from the group said there was a lot of anger that the Minister had made the announcement in the middle of lockdown.

“Parents have contacted the action group saying their children are in tears and totally shell shocked with this announcement.

“What children have had to experience over the last 12 months with Covid-19 with mental health issues this has added further anxiety to children.

“The anger is also focused on the CCMS for their prolonged and sustained attacked on St. Mary’s. A lot of parents have confirmed that all financial support to the local parish will cease with immediate effect such is the outcry among the local community.”

Frank said the group are reviewing each development proposal with great detail and they are keeping their option open until they complete these reviews.

Local councillor, Anthony Feely also expressed his disappointment and anger at the decision.

His wife works at the school while he has two sons currently attending the school.

“A lot of people have worked so hard over the years to keep St. Mary’s open.

“I have two boys attending the school and it’s very hard on all pupils and staff currently in the school.”

Sinn Féin MLA, and former pupil, Jemma Dolan sought an urgent oral question from Minister Weir following the announcement but it was rejected.

“I was so disappointed that Minister Peter Weir has decided not to approve Development Proposal 630 to change Brollagh to an integrated school.

“But to actually close the school in a post-Covid world has really angered me.

“”It is very frustrating for myself and all those who are fighting to keep the school open when we are continually ignored by CCMS, the Education Authority and now the Education Minister.

“We all must continue to fight to ensure post primary education remains in our local area.”
