WITH just months to go until the new South West College opensm one local politician has called for a foot bridge to be installed.
Sinn Féin MLA Jemma Dolan has called for funding to be provided to build a pedestrian link bridge from the new South West College Campus in Enniskillen to the centre of the town.
Miss Dolan said: "I have written to the Economy and Infrastructure ministers asking for funding for a footbridge across Lough Erne, connecting the new state-of-the-art South West College to the island of Enniskillen.
"The new campus, being easily connected to the centre of Enniskillen, could boost the shops, cafes and restaurants on the island. This would not only help the local economy, but it would also encourage and facilitate more walkers.
"An added benefit for walkers is that increased physical activity improves people's mental health and well-being, whilst also improving our environment by reducing our carbon footprint.
"I have also been talking with Fermanagh and Omagh Distict Council on this issue. The Council had previously undertaken a feasibility study for a bridge connection, and continue to work on this project.
"I will continue my engagement with all departments on this until there is further progress on the footbridge," she added.
