Detectives are appealing for witnesses after graffiti with an apparent religious connotation was spray-painted on the exterior walls of Enniskillen Castle.
The phrase "Be still, and know......", which is featured in Psalm 46:10 in the Bible, was spray-painted in turquoise on the castle wall near a pathway that edges the River Erne.
A spokesman for Fermanagh and Omagh District Council told The Impartial Reporter that the Council is "saddened at this wanton act of vandalism".
He said: "The external wall of the arcaded range at Enniskillen Castle was defaced with graffiti on the night of July 13/14. The police have been notified.
"This element of the castle complex is in the custodianship of the Historic Environment Division of the Department for Communities, and is occupied by the Inniskillings Museum.
“The Council is saddened at this wanton act of vandalism and will assist the police in its enquiries and has offered support to the Historic Environment Division and to the Inniskillings Museum in repairing the damage."
In a statement to this newspaper, PSNI Sergeant Laird said: “It is understood that the criminal damage occurred some time this morning, Wednesday, July 14.
"Our enquiries are continuing, and we would appeal for anyone who might have information which may assist the investigation to contact police at 101, quoting reference number 592 of the 14/07/21.
“If someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity, Crimestoppers, and speak to them anonymously at 0800 555 111.”
