THE PSNI are treating the removal of a Union flag which was replaced with another flag on the night of July 11th as a hate incident.
There were widespread social media reports regarding the alleged hanging of an effigy of an Orangeman in Enniskillen at Gaol Square, Dublin Road – however, the PSNI has confirmed that such reports are untrue.
Speaking on Monday, July 12, Chief Inspector Rory Hoy said: “We received a report today about what was described as an effigy on a lamppost in the vicinity of Dublin Road in Enniskillen last night [Sunday, 11 July].
“We have since been made aware that what was believed to be an effigy was, in fact, a flag, and that it was removed last night [July 11].”
DUP Enniskillen Councillor Keith Elliott said: “I was at the scene and helped deal with the incident on July 11.
“It was disappointing that it occurred; however, the matter was dealt with quickly.
“I can confirm that it was a flag and not a effigy, as had been widely reported.
“The police are now investigating this hate incident.”
