Further to what this newspaper reported yesterday (July 14) regarding the appearance of graffiti with apparent religious connotation at Enniskillen Castle, it has emerged that words of a homophobic nature were also spraypainted on the exterior walls of the Fermanagh landmark.
Police are treating the incident as a hate crime.
Alongside the words "Be still, and know......", which was spraypainted in turquoise on the castle walls in the early hours of Wednesday morning, further words read: "Beware sodomites, repent!! Ye must be born again!! Exod 3:1".
In a statement to The Impartial Reporter today (Thursday, July 15), the PSNI have reiterated their call for witnesses.
Sergeant Laird said: “It is understood that the criminal damage occurred some time yesterday morning, Wednesday, July 14. This incident is now being treated as a hate crime.
“Our enquiries are continuing and we would again appeal for anyone who might have information which may assist our investigation to contact police at 101, quoting reference number 592 of the 14/07/21.
“If someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can also contact the independent charity, Crimestoppers, and speak to them anonymously at 0800 555 111.”
Anthony Rasdale, Chairman of the Inniskillings Museum Trustees, also condemned the graffiti on the castle walls.
He said: "The Inniskillings Museum was shocked and saddened to discover graffiti on the historic walls of Enniskillen Castle on Wednesday morning.
"The Trustees of the museum wholly condemn this act of vandalism which shows a total disregard and lack of respect for the historic castle.
"We will do all we can to assist the Historic Environment Division to remove the defacement of our iconic landmark."
