Although an architect by trade, Ryan Kelly, from Donagh also has skills in fine art.

Specialising in oils, Ryan predominantly paints portraits in his bold style, but also enjoys creating pieces that have a hidden meaning.

He has a striking style that can effortlessly present itself depending on the piece that he’s working on, with Ryan comfortable with pieces that are realistic, somewhat more fantastical or even outright abstract – whatever inspires him at that time.

Here he talks to The Impartial Reporter about his biggest influences, what he is currently working on and what his art means to him.

What is your artistic background? Are you self-taught or did you go to art school/do courses?

I STUDIED art in St. Michael’s College, Enniskillen, then went on to study architecture in University of Ulster and I have just recently completed a tattoo artist course in London.

What inspires your art?

I AM inspired by nature, human activity, and colour. Besides portraits, I like to create pieces that have a hidden meaning, adding bright colours to give a dramatic effect.

Who or what are your biggest influences?

LEONID Afremov would be my most influential artist. My biggest influences in architecture are Alvar Aalto, Norman Foster and a detailed focus on designing to suit all occupants’s use in buildings.

Is there a specific place that you do your work? Do you have a studio?

I HAVE an office/studio space at home.

What has been your most ambitious piece, to date?

PROBABLY my painting of Conor McGregor.

What different artistic media do you use, and which is your favourite?

I STARTED off with watercolours and acrylics but then discovered oil paints in St. Michael’s, and they have been my favourite ever since.

What are you currently working on?

A PAINTING portraying a welcoming message to parents and their autistic kids.

Do you exhibit your work anywhere?

ON MY Facebook page, R. Kelly Design.

Any new artistic ventures planned for the rest of 2021?

I WISH to broaden my painting styles from other cultural backgrounds and try get my work recognised further than my local area.

What has been your favourite project, to date?

I HAVE been working with my local football club and current boss to rejuvenate our football ground, proposing to make it an inspiring community hub for everyone.

What are you up to when you aren’t creating art?

PLAYING football, going to the gym, or meeting up with my friends.

How would you describe your artistic style?

I WOULD describe it like a bold stroke-style. However, I am willing to experiment with different styles now after returning home from travelling.

What does your art mean to you?

IT MEANS a lot to me if my work can illuminate a space or improve someone’s life in any way possible.
