A MAN caught travelling 33mph over the speed limit has avoided being disqualified from driving.
Deputy District Judge Greg McCourt said Frank Garvey (28), of Larne Road, Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim was on the “verge of disqualification” following the high speed he travelled at on the A4 Belfast Road on June 19.
The court heard police were monitoring speed on the Belfast Road near Maguiresbridge when they detected a Volkswagen Golf travelling at 93mph on the overtaking lane heading towards Lisbellaw.
They stopped the car and spoke to the defendant, who told them he was overtaking and needed to get into the lane before it ended.
Stephen McNamara, representing Garvey, said Garvey had two options – to slow down or speed up.
Judge McCourt said Garvey was on the “verge of disqualification” for the very high speed and that he obviously had been building up to that speed.
Garvey was fined £350 and given six penalty points.
