A MAN who was caught driving without insurance or a driving licence twice in the space of a month has been given a suspended sentence.
Ben Chauhan (20), of Tullans Park, Coleraine, was stopped on September 9 and October 4, 2020 by police in Fermanagh.
On September 9, police observed a Volkswagen Jetta travelling along the Queen Elizabeth Road, Enniskillen towards Belmore Street before signalling for it to pull over.
They spoke to the driver and asked for details, while checks showed Chauhan had no insurance or driving licence.
Chauhan was cautioned and made full admissions during a notebook interview.
On October 4, a Volkswagen Jetta on Market Street, Ederney was stopped by police. Again the defendant, Chauhan, had no valid driving licence or insurance. There was a passenger in the vehicle who was the owner and only one insured.
Chauhan’s solicitor, Briege Martin, told Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday that her client accepted responsibility for his actions.
In relation to the incident in October, she said the defendant had been in a relationship with the owner, who was feeling unwell, and he had agreed to drive, which he regrets.
Convicting Chauhan of two counts of having no insurance and no driving licence, Deputy District Judge Greg McCourt gave him a three-month prison sentence, suspended for one year, banned him from driving for a year, and fined him £100.
