Despite the conditions not being the best for fishing, the 41st Lough Melvin Open was deemed a success by Garrison Lough Melvin Anglers Association Chairman, Terry McGovern.
Some 318 boats took to the lough over the four-day competition, with an extra day added to help organisers deal with Covid-19 restrictions and ensure the safety of all involved.
After the four days it was Trevor McClearn and Davy Watson, from Co. Down, who claimed the top prize out of a field that boasted local anglers as well as those from as away as Cork, Kerry, Mayo and Scotland.
Competition
Speaking about the competition, Terry said: “It went off as well as it could have, even with Covid.
“All anglers fished. We added an extra day and I don’t think we are ever going back to the old format. The extra day was helpful.”
Looking back at the fishing, Terry continued: “Fishing conditions were poor but the fishing was good for the weather we had, and we got great feedback.”
Terry congratulated Trevor and Davy on their victory and said it was lovely to see the two men claim top prize as they were familiar faces at Lough Melvin.
“It was very successful and it was a good turn out, more than we expected. We hope this will give other clubs the incentive for next year,” added Terry.
Presentations were made in the club house following the four days of fishing from August 25-29.
Behind Trevor and Davy in second place was Gary Smith and Matt Fahy, with Aiden Heffernan and Colin McAndrew in third.
The Best Overseas Angler went to John Collins, with Richard Cameron picking up Best Southern Angler, and Gary Crothers the Best Northern Angler, and also Best Club Angler.
John Parkyn was Best Junior, while Best Lady went to Ann McWilliams, with James Doherty winning Best Committee Angler.
