Belfast based Bright Umbrella Theatrical Productions bring their fast-paced modern version of Seamus Heaney’s ‘The Burial at Thebes’ to the Ardhowen on Thursday, September 9 at 8pm. Directed by Trevor Gill, the play's narrative follows an incident where two brothers fight to their mutual deaths. Head of State, Creon, decrees that one brother – deemed a hero – should be buried with full military honours whilst the corpse of the other – deemed a traitor - is left to rot in the street. He decrees that anyone who attempts to bury the body will face immediate death. Antigone, sister of the abandoned corpse, decides that she will see her brother buried irrespective of the consequences, and the consequences are indeed dire. Heaney’s, ‘The Burial at Thebes’ is based on the ancient Greek tragedy ‘Antigone’ by Sophocles. The play deals with conflicts between individual freedom and the imposition of restrictions by the state and with conflicts between conscience and civil law. This fast paced modern production by Bright Umbrella is not to be missed!
The Ardhowen is delighted to welcome Fermanagh Film Club into the theatre for a programme of twice monthly events featuring Art House, special interest and foreign language films.
The first feature is the Oscar-winning Nomadland, on Wednesday, September 8 at 8pm.
In Chloé Zhao’s award-winning feature, Fern is a woman in her 60’s, who, having lost her husband and her home, sets off on the road to explore life as a modern-day nomad.
A mixture of fiction and documentary filmmaking, Nomadland features a cast of real nomads - a community built on openness and comradery, where Fern finds joy and acceptance.
