A birthday card from Her Majesty The Queen was hand-delivered to Margaret ‘Peggy’ Cathcart as she celebrated her 100th birthday at the weekend.
Celebrating her milestone birthday with her children, Ian Cathcart, Joan (Cooke) and Malcolm Cathcart, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at the Lough Erne Golf Resort on Sunday, September 5, the Enniskillen centenarian was visited by Viscount Brookeborough, the Lord Lieutenant of Fermanagh, who presented her with the special birthday card.
“We are honoured that Lord Brookeborough took the time to come out; we really appreciate it,” said Mrs. Cathcart’s daughter, Joan.
Born on September 5, 1921, Mrs. Cathcart, née Reid, grew up on a farm at Gortaloughan, Enniskillen.
“She always had an interest in farming and the outdoors,” said Joan, who noted how her mother enjoyed gardening.
As a young woman she worked in an office in Enniskillen until she married the love of her life, the late Frederick ‘Freddy’ Cathcart, a local businessman.
She then became a housewife, raising their five children – John, Roy, Ian, Joan and Malcolm – at their home at Drumsillagh, Enniskillen.
Her son John tragically died following an accident at the age of eight, and Roy passed away in 2016. Sadly, Mrs. Cathcart experienced another tragic loss with the death of her grandson, Timothy Cathcart, in 2014.
Mrs. Cathcart currently lives at the Tilery Nursing Home, Enniskillen.
Calling her mother’s birthday a “lovely day”, Joan and the rest of the family were delighted to be able to celebrate with her.
