CLARE Molloy of Holy trinity Primary School is pictured carrying a dove of peace, with New York-born Mrs. Rose. McCaughey carrying the US flag – two people of different generations, yet united in peace by the horrors of the recent terrorist attacks in America which have stunned the world.
It was almost a week to the hour since the devastating attacks that the people of Fermanagh paused on Tuesday to remember the thousands who lost their lives.
A 15-minute service organised by the Fermanagh Trust outside the Clinton Peace Centre allowed the people from the county to show their deep sense of sorrow and regret at the events.
Hundreds, including members of the emergency services, turned out to show their solidarity with the families of the bereaved across the world.
The solemn service of remembrance was in sharp contrast to the scenes of joy in May when former US President Clinton visited the peace centre which takes his name at the east end of Enniskillen.
A lone piper, Daniel McCann, from Cavanacarragh Pipe Band, played Amazing Grace at 1pm as schoolchildren, local politicians and members of the public, before church leaders from Fermanagh led the gathering in prayer.
The Rev. David Cupples of the Presbyterian Church said that we are all horrified by what we witnessed last Tuesday: “We recognise it as evil. We all ask ourselves how are we to respond to something we recognise as evil.”
