In a Twitter statement today Derry Girls creator and writer, Lisa McGee, announced that filming for season 3 would begin. However, the statement was bittersweet as she confirmed it would be the last.
The statement read: “It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series.”
The statement confirmed season 3 filming will soon be underway to take fans on “one last adventure”, but did not give a date to expect the new series.
It continued: “Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will forever be proud of everything it’s achieved.”

In ending, McGee didn’t rule out the possibility of the loveable characters returning in the future somehow: “Who knows if Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle and James will return in some other guise someday, but for now that is it for us…”
Fans have responded on Twitter to the news. One replied: “You need to write another Northern Irish show. We are not done with your brilliant writing and highlighting Northern Irish talent.”
Another said: “Should I be happy or sad here, conflicting emotions”.
Season 1 of Derry Girls can be watched on Netflix and both seasons can be watched on All4, Channel 4’s player.
