A man barred from ASDA but who stole vodka and whiskey from the store has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

It was heard at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday, that on February 5, 2020, police received a report from security staff at ASDA in Enniskillen.

A male – Richard Noel Slattery (33), of Trasna Way, Lisnaskea – who was barred from the store had entered and then left with a bottle of vodka and a bottle of whiskey valued at £20.

When staff tried to stop him, he ran off in the direction of Tesco, while another male who was with him received a community resolution notice for the incident.

Slattery could not be located but was eventually arrested on March 5 for burglary.

He gave police a no comment interview, apart from saying: "100 per cent I wasn't in ASDA – I don't stoop that low any more."

His solicitor, Michael Fahy, told the court that with the incident being more than two years old, "quite a lot of water has passed under the bridge".

He pointed out Slattery's last offending was on August 20, which showed a reduction in offending, and said the charge would have been theft instead of burglary only he was barred from the store.

Slattery was convicted of burglary by District Judge Steven Keown and handed a four-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to pay £20.
