THE public toilets at Nugent’s Entry in Enniskillen should not be refurbished, but relocated in a site more accessible for tourists, according to several business people in the area.
Shop owners have lodged their objections to the Council’s plans to rebuild the toilet block which were extensively damaged in a fire at the end of last year. The Council had applied for planning permission in January to refurbish the toilets. However, the shop owners say the present site is unsuitable.
In a letter to the Technical Services department of Fermanagh Council, the businessmen say if the toilets are not moved to a better position, they will quickly return to the “disgusting and appalling” state they were in before the fire.
“We want to voice our deep concern at the siting of these toilets. We would all object in the strongest manner to this planning application.”
The businessmen state the toilets have been kept in a disgusting and appalling condition due to wanton vandalism and, if restored, their condition will again deteriorate.
Also they say the toilets are reported to have been used by young persons for sex, drug abuse and drinking, while it has also been reported to police that men have exposed themselves outside thee toilets.
Enniskillen Chamber of Commerce has backed the businessmen.
