A man who was stopped by police at a road traffic collision was not insured in the car he was driving, a court has heard.
On November 6 last, police were in attendance at the collision on the Boa Island Road, Belleek at around 9pm when a Peugeot 308 approached the cordon.
Police signalled the car to stop, and checks showed there was no insurance for the vehicle. The driver, Timothy Wolfe (23), of Mulleek Road, Belleek, was interviewed and said he thought he was insured but accepted there was no cover.
His solicitor told the court Wolfe had previously advised that he had got insurance online and there was a black box device fitted to the car, and that provided his driving was acceptable, the insurance would be automatically renewed and he thought this was the case.
She said it was a genuine error by Wolfe, adding that insurance was taken out the next day and her client was extremely apologetic.
Deputy District Judge Trevor Browne described the incident as having “slightly unusual circumstances”, and handed Wolfe six penalty points, and a 12-month conditional discharge.
