The students from Devenish College welcomed an inspiring guest last week – an avid explorer who trekked across the South Pole.
Devenish College was delighted to welcome Captain Preet Chandi to the school. Capt. Chandi serves as a British Army medical officer, and was visiting schools across Northern Ireland last week.
The 33-year-old from Derby braved the elements last month when she skied from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole in 40 days, seven hours and three minutes.
Capt. Chandi delivered a question and answer session to an eager audience of Year 9 students and staff, with a BBC News NI crew also in attendance at the event.
During her expedition, Capt. Chandi explained how she had combated -50C temperatures whilst pulling a sleigh weighing nearly 90kg.
Of her trekking a total of 700 miles in order to reach the southernmost point in the world, Capt. Chandi regaled the listening students with inspiring snippets of information about her journey.
Her message to the students of Devenish College was clear – to pursue their dreams and push their boundaries.
A spokesperson from Devenish College said: "The reaction to Capt. Chandi’s visit was incredibly positive, particularly as her arrival was the pinnacle of many weeks of preparations within the school.
"In Geography, Year 9 students traditionally embark on a learning expedition of Antarctica.
"Additionally, a small group of Year 8 students applied their knowledge of key language devices to Capt. Chandi’s achievements, comparing her resilience and bravery to that of Hercules."
Following her presentation, Year 8 students presented Capt. Chandi with numerous mementoes of her visit to the school and to Fermanagh.
In promoting her endeavours, the students of Devenish College were in agreement that Capt. Chandi is an inspirational role model for both young and old today.
