A young Co. Letirim man who had pulled into a lay-by on his way home was slurring his words when police spoke to him, a court has heard.
On March 3, at around 2.45am, police observed headlights in a lay-by on the Sligo Road, Enniskillen.
When they pulled in there was a Volkswagen Caddy van with Kyle McGloin (18), of Maughamore, Glenade, Co. Leitrim in the vehicle.
He was charged with driving with excess alcohol in breath, using a motor vehicle without insurance, and having no driving licence
Officers noticed his eyes were bloodshot, there was a smell of intoxicating liquor, and he was slurring his words.
The key was in the ignition and the engine was running, the court heard.
McGloin failed a preliminary breath test before giving an evidential reading of 50mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.
He was interviewed the following day and made full admissions.
McGloin said he had two or three pints of beer in a pub in Enniskillen, and he also thought he was insured to drive under his father's insurance policy.
Michael Fahy, representing McGloin, told the court his client was correct in asserting that he was insured in the Republic of Ireland, but it was not the case in the North.
He said McGloin had been working across the Border and had taken a couple of pints and talked to a friend, but it was not an excessive amount of alcohol consumed, but it was not the "best start to his driving career".
McGloin was banned from driving for 12 months, and fined a total of £600.
