Fermanagh Indie-Folk duo Laytha have released their latest single, ‘Wavey Gamey’ (inset right), ahead of the launch of their debut album on April 22.
Featuring Niamh Carney [vocals] and Philana Nolan [vocals and guitar], Laytha have been making a big impact on the Indie music scene over the past number of years, releasing singles ‘Daughter’, ‘What Will I Gain’ and now, most recently ‘Wavey Gamey’.
As Laytha move towards the release of their debut album, due out in the coming weeks, themes begin to emerge from the Laytha discography.
Whilst ‘Daughter’ dealt with connection and ‘What Will I Gain’ with family, new single ‘Wavey Gamey’ takes stock of the ties that bind, and the burdens they bear.
Led by the duo’s trademark harmonies and melodies, ‘Wavey Gamey’ sees a continuation of a journey through the narrow, overgrown paths of Laytha’s sonic horizons.
“Wavey Gamey explores what often feels like an inner battle between love and fear: how even in the highs of a loving relationship, like a wave, you wait for the inevitable crash, and wonder if letting love win is worth the risk of being hurt,” said Laytha.
Though deeply personal, Laytha’s newest track is written with universality in mind.
The pitfalls we encounter from verse to verse ring true with a clarity mirrored by the bright vocals that have become a staple of the Laytha sound.
Laid upon a bedrock of gorgeous string and acoustic arrangements, ‘Wavey Gamey’ has the instantaneous warmth and familiarity of a traditional Folk song, but the horns and spirit of a fresh Indie favourite.
Its relesease certainly builds on Laytha’s assured, distinctive sound, continuing to develop the duo’s already impressive catalogue and songwriting vision.
