A drunk driver who was followed home by police was over twice the legal limit, a court has heard.
On March 18, police followed a Ford Transit van at the Inishmore Road, Carrybridge in the direction of Lisnaskea.
The van – driven by Neil Cathcart (24), of Aghnacarra Road, Lisbellaw – was observed drifting across the road and cutting corners before taking a left turn onto another road.
The van then performed a u-turn and turned right onto the Aghnacarra Road, where it pulled up at a property.
Cathcart stumbled out of the van and appeared intoxicated to the police. His speech was also slurred and there was a smell of intoxicating liquor.
He failed a preliminary breath test and was subsequently arrested. Cathcart then gave an evidential reading of 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath in custody.
His solicitor, Michael Fahy, asked the court to give Cathcart credit for a plea at the earliest available stage.
He described that on the day in question, Cathcart had finished work on the Friday evening and went to a local hostelry less than half a mile from his house, and had a few drinks.
He said Cathcart did not want to leave the van, which was full of tools, at this location, and made the foolish decision to drive.
Reflecting the high reading, District Judge fined Cathcart £400 and disqualified him from driving for 12 months for driving with excess alcohol in his breath.
