Children and staff at Lisbellaw Primary School had a royally good time as they celebrated Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee on Tuesday, May 31.
Happily for the children, lessons were replaced by a tasty tea treat and the school’s usual red colour scheme was enhanced by the blue and white for a superb patriotic display. The school’s kitchen got in on the act, providing lunch in a special Union Flag box.
The school was also treated to a special visit from Her Majesty, who smiled constantly throughout proceedings, though she couldn’t be persuaded to take a slice of cake.
As part of the celebrations, all the classes have contributed to a special ‘Time Capsule’ to be buried in the school grounds to mark both the Jubilee and Northern Ireland’s 100th birthday last year. Who knows what future generations will make of our descriptions of Covid-19, Disney + and the shops on Main Street?
Principal Jason Kilfedder said: “It was lovely to have the buzz and excitement back in the school assembly hall after a long absence due to Covid-19. The children were treated to a delicious tea party along with gifts of a commemorative mug, pin badge and book. These will certainly help them remember this special occasion for many years to come.”
Reverend William Jeffrey, Lisbellaw’s Church of Ireland Rector, was able to inform the children about The Queen’s great Christian faith during a special celebration assembly and Jim Gamble, representing the local Orange Lodge, was on hand to present gifts to mark the occasion.
