The need for prompt and drastic regulations respecting the traffic of Enniskillen streets was easily seen on Monday, the fair day, when the streets were blocked in several places, and we hope the Urban Council and all others concerned will speedily act to prevent disaster.
The magistrates on the Bench and the Press have spoken frequently on this subject, and not sufficient action has been taken. However, some move has been made.
On Monday two of the chief offenders, by not keeping to the left, were two police cars, each car containing an officer, who flagrantly disregarded the warning at the memorial of the Great War.
So flagrant was the misconduct that a policeman was placed there to see that the notice at the spot was obeyed.
As Captain Murray, the District Inspector, under the County Inspector of Constabulary, is largely responsible for the safety of the traffic, we expect that he will rigorously see that the directions be obeyed or in default that any offender be promptly summoned to Petty Sessions.
No matter who he be, officer or private, of military or police, any driving to the wrong side or at an excessive speed becomes a case for the magistrates to deal with.
Another death of a policeman has occurred through the overturning of a car through too fast driving.
The public will be surprised to learn that some of these drivers have not got licenses at all – that some of the cars have wrong numbers, or none at all, and that it is high time the department responsible should cause an inquiry to be made in to the conditions which prevail.
In any case we hope that the permanent Ulster Constabulary will assist the magistrates and the public to put an end to speed dangerous to the public, whether in town or country, and that when any car do offend that its number or some sign on it be noted, to enable a prosecution to be taken, and most certainly, that when by reckless driving any accident occur, the driver shall be held responsible to the law.
If an accident occurs on a railway, the engine driver is immediately placed under arrest.
The same law must apply to the driver who kills or injures his comrade policeman or any member of the public. The public must get protection.
