More important than court

The Derrygonnelly magistrates were informed at their last court that the nominal plaintiff in a case was unable to be present as he had to attend a most important meeting.

The meeting in question was the Omagh Field Trials.

Unwelcome island vandalism

The old Abbey ruins on Devenish Island, Lough Erne are suffering from the depredations of tourists said to be from America.

These visitors to our shores are very welcome, but if they go curio seeking and take away portions of these ancient relics that are of historic value, in time nothing will be left for tourists of the future.

The Old Abbey on Devenish Island, which is one of the most perfect specimens of old Irish Abbeys, has had a portion of its walls tossed, the gate which preserved the entrance to the Abbey stairway has been forced open, and a portion of the wall taken away or thrown down by ‘trippers seeking perhaps hidden treasures locked up in its walls.

Whoever has charge of the ruins should report the matter to the authorities.

Resurfacing Town Streets

At Enniskillen Urban Council on Friday, Mr. George Whaley, J.P. presiding, the finance committee recommended that the Council accede to the application of the Electric Light Company for permission to erect a demonstratable light on the Diamond, and illustrated signs at Eden Street and Castle Street.

The Borough Surveyour (Mr. James Donnelly) spoke: “I beg to report that the resurfacing work of the main street has been in hand, and the work is now fairly well advanced.

“Slightly more than half of the streets have been almost finished, one final scaling coat only being required on the section only partly completed.

“The probable cost of the work so far as it has gone is £592. I am not in a position to say definitely the actual cost until after this week’s returns have been made, but the amount above mentioned is fairly near to what the actual cost will be.”
