THE structural state of Ballindarragh Bridge, outside Lisnaskea, is causing local residents concern. The bridge, on the Lisnaskea-Carrybridge Road, has been the scene of many accidents and is presently in a poor state of repair with a gaping hole in the parapet which leads to a 50-foot drop into the Colebrooke River.
Chevrons have been erected by the Department of Environment’s Roads Service and wire fencing covers the hole in the parapet, but local residents fear that unless more work is carried out there is going to be another serious accident. Several people have died in road accidents at the bridge.
“It is in an extremely dangerous conditions,” says Mr. Kevin Harte (pictured) who lives nearby.
“In the last three months there have been at least six or seven accidents - and three in one week in September,” he added.
Mr. Harte said that when he contacted the DOE, almost one year ago, they said they would inspect the bridge. However, nothing was done until the last few weeks when the wire netting and chevrons appeared.
“We would like to see the wall fixed properly and the sharp bend on the approach to the bridge taken away. Then motorists coming from both directions could get a clear view of it.”
The residents believe the chevrons are not much more than “unsightly” and do not seem to slow motorists down.
