Legislation for parking in Enniskillen town centre is still not yet in place following the completion of the new public realm scheme, the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has confirmed.
Following reports of motorists receiving parking tickets in the town centre in recent weeks, The Impartial Reporter asked the DfI if the legislation had now been implemented.
In response, a DfI spokesperson said: “With the introduction of any new public realm scheme, which changes the road layout, new legislation is required to define the updated restrictions.
“This work could not be initiated until the scheme was built, to allow for any alterations to the design. The legislative process for this is ongoing and will take ... months to complete.”
Before the public realm scheme, motorists could park for a maximum of one hour in the town centre.
However, as legislation is not currently in place, on-street parking in Enniskillen is free all day, and motorists can use loading bays and disabled parking bays.
