A new book written and collated by the nephew of the great British artist and Fermanagh native William Scott, detailing the Scott family history, was launched at Enniskillen Castle on Saturday, April 22, with a surprise special guest in attendance.
‘William Scott: A Family History’, written by Cardwell McClure, the son of William Scott’s younger sister, Mary McClure (née Scott), is a comprehensive guide to the Scott family and provides a first-hand experience of the family’s trials through poverty, tragedy, war and fame.
Hosted by Friends of Fermanagh County Museum at Enniskillen Castle Museums, around 40 people attended the launch event, where Sarah McHugh, Museum and Heritage Manager, gave a short introduction, followed by a talk about the book by Cardwell.
Speaking to The Impartial Reporter following the event, Cardwell described it as an “excellent day” and commented on his surprise at the attendance of his cousin, William Scott’s eldest son, Robert, who travelled from Italy specifically to attend the book launch.
“The day was highlighted by a very, very unique surprise that my cousin, Robert, flew from Italy to attend the launch,” said Cardwell, who was very grateful for Robert’s attendance, commenting that it “helped immensely with the promotion of the book”.
He added: “What a surprise and encouragement!”
Delighted by the turnout at the event, Cardwell added: “The response from the audience was obvious from the conversations that I had that William Scott CBE RA is still held in the highest regard in Co. Fermanagh, especially the town of Enniskillen where he grew up.”
Although the book is currently sold out at the Fermanagh County Museum following its launch on Saturday, Cardwell assured that it will be back in stock early next week.
