The Devenish Gallery in Enniskillen is selling discontinued stock, including frames and mirrors, at significantly reduced prices, with the money raised from sales to be donated between three important charities.
The brainchild of Colin Burns, owner of the Devenish Gallery, the fundraiser will be in aid of Médecins Sans Frontières, Water Aid and a girls’ school in Malawi – three charities that he personally supports.
Talking about the work of each charity, Colin said: “Médecins Sans Frontières, [I have supported them] from my time in Africa. They go to all the troubled spots in the world.
“The medics volunteer to go out and they take very dangerous jobs on. They do an awful lot of work where nobody else does it.
“Water Aid is a very fundamental one. They create boreholes all over, but mostly in Africa, where [some people may] drink dirty water and kids die as a result of it.
“So they bore holes and put in wells to provide clean water,” he said, adding: “The other one is a girls’ school in Malawi which I have supported for some time.
“Malawi is very poor, with people existing on very little.
“Education for girls is the backbone, in my view, of development. We support it and we get some regular feedback from them.”
Outlining the types of items that are part of the charity sale, Colin said: “It’ll be sales of upcycled and discontinued lines at very reasonable prices.
“If you are an artist or a photographer, and you were to buy any of the frames [that are on sale for charity], you would be paying four/five times the price,” he added, noting that one large frame in particular would have retailed at £120, but is in the charity sale for £35.
“Even if we raise a modest amount, that would be great,” Colin told this newspaper.
The items that are part of the charity sale are currently on display in the window of the Devenish Gallery, which is based at Forthill Street, Enniskillen. Those interested in making purchases should inquire within.
