As is the norm for The Twelfth demonstration in Rossnowlagh, Co. Donegal, the annual procession in the Republic – the sole such event – was accompanied by pleasant weather, with participants and onlookers enjoying frequent spells of sunshine at the lovely coastal setting.

The rolling hills of County Donegal and the striking coastline provided a superb backdrop to what must be the most scenic setting for any Twelfth parade.

The annual Rossnowlagh procession held last Saturday, July 8, just a matter of days before the demonstrations in Northern Ireland, once again attracted an excellent turn-out, with a high amount of lodges and onlookers alike at the coastal spot.

Upwards of 50 lodges from Donegal, Cavan, Leitrim and Monaghan, as well as visiting Orangemen from Northern Ireland and further afield, took part in the parade, which began close to St. John’s Parish Church at 12.30pm.

The parade then made its way down Rossnowlagh’s narrow country roads, which were thronged with onlookers, to the demonstration field on the edge of the shoreline.

The annual gathering is renowned for its family-friendly atmosphere and minimal security presence, with several locals, curious visiting tourists and daytrippers also taking in the day’s sights, sounds and colour.

A religious service was held at 3pm, with the service conducted by the Rev. Brian Russell, Rector of Drumholm Parish.

The day also saw a collection held on the day in aid of Orange charities, with many people keen to help support worthy causes, with the return parade leaving the demonstration field later in the evening.

The event passed off very well, with a warm welcome for all from Donegal neighbours, and the participating lodges, bands and onlookers enjoying the Twelfth demonstration at Rossnowlagh.
