The Department for Infrastructure has confirmed that no new schools will benefit from the installation of part-time 20mph speed limits until a review is completed to determine if further investment in the scheme is justified.
In 2021, a part-time speed limit of 20mph was applied to certain roads Bellanaleck, Derrylin, Florencecourt and Maguiresbridge.
In 2022, the part-time speed limit was included on certain roads in Belcoo, Tempo, Donagh and Belleek.
It was brought to the attention of members of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council at the October 3 meeting that the introduction of new schools to the scheme has been discontinued.
In response to a letter from Chief Executive Alison McCullagh, Dr. Denis McMahon, Permanent Secretary, Department for Infrastructure (DfI) said the Department invested £2million in recent years introducing part-time 20mph speed limits.
The work is currently undertaking a review to determine if further investment is justified.
“Until this review is complete the Department is not in a position to commit to the installation of any additional part-time 20mph speed limits at schools.”
Eddie Roofe, Alliance Party Councillor for Fermanagh and Omagh District Council commented that it’s “disappointing” to see the Department for Infrastructure delay the further roll out of a scheme that was “very much appreciated by parents, particularly as Fermanagh contains many schools yet to avail of the scheme”.
