A Fermanagh Councillor has called on Stormont to offer a bespoke package to BT/ EE workers to save 300 jobs in the local area.
Sinn Féin's Sheamus Greene made the plea during May’s monthly meeting of the Council held on Tuesday evening.
Speaking about engagement with BT at a recent meeting, Councillor Greene said: “This is 300 jobs in Fermanagh, if you took the equivalent of that if you went down to Ballymena or somewhere east of the Bann, I suppose Wright Brothers (Wrightbus) was an example, probably this [the closure of BT] would have as big an affect as our economy in Fermanagh as the Wright Brothers potentially closing down in Ballymena.
“Maybe we could ask them [Department for the Economy / Invest NI], what they are actually putting in place, can the money that has been offered to Wrightbus be reinvested into Fermanagh around other companies to try and get the equivalent of those 300 jobs covered in Fermanagh.”
A letter from Invest NI was noted during the Council meeting, in it, Kieran Donoghue, Chief Executive Officer of Invest NI said: “I can confirm that the feasibility of BT/EE retaining a site presence in Enniskillen has been consistently raised. While details of discussions with client companies such as BT are confidential in nature, and I am unable to comment directly on the specific discussions with BT aimed at retaining jobs at the Enniskillen site.
“There are several ways in which Invest NI can incentivise businesses generally, and the company has been made fully aware of the applicability of these to the Enniskillen situation”
Councillor Adam Gannon, SDLP, discussed the letter during the meeting he said: “It doesn’t sound like anything was offered, “The least both the staff and people of Fermanagh deserve is to know is what was BT/EE offered, what was on the table.
“Individual consumers can make their own judgement as to where to take the judgement on “We need specific details and Invest NI won’t give it to us."
Councillor Gannon queried if BT/ EE were offered a bespoke package by Invest NI and asked that this matter be looked into.
He proposed that a letter be written to Economy Minister Conor Murphy on the issue of what was offered to BT/ EE and this was seconded by Councillor Bernard McGrath.
It was announced in February that BT Group may close its EE (formally BT) office site that employs hundreds of people across the local community.
However, BT Group said no decision was made on the future of Enniskillen, and staff are being offered a voluntary leavers package.
The BT Group have indicated that over 250 people have signed the Voluntary Leaver Scheme.
