The Ecumenical Service for Pentecost Sunday in Clogher Diocese will take place this year at Lough Derg, Pettigo in Co. Donegal.
The Church of Ireland Bishop of Clogher, the Right Rev. Dr. Ian Ellis, and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Clogher, the Most Rev. Larry Duffy, will participate in the service which begins at 3pm on Sunday, May 19.
The address will be given by Monsignor Laurence Flynn, Prior of Lough Derg.
Transport to the island is by boat with boats available to ferry people across at the following times: 1.30pm, 2pm, 2.20pm, and 2.40pm. Boat tickets, which are free of charge, are available at the Visitor centre.
Afterwards, refreshments will be provided at Lough Derg.
Since 2000, the Roman Catholic and Church or Ireland bishops of Clogher have come together, along with members of their respective church communities, to mark together the Day of Pentecost, or Pentecost Sunday, as it also known.
The Day of Pentecost marks the end of the 50-day season of Easter.
Moreover, it marks the descent of the Holy Spirit in the upper room and the beginning of apostolic preaching, thus marking a defining moment in the origin of the Christian Church.
Christian associations with the feast begin with Acts of the Apostles 2: 1-45.
Each year, a site of historic significance in relation to the origins of the Christian church in different parts of the diocese is chosen to host the Ecumenical Service.
Lough Derg has been a pilgrimage destination for well over 1,000 years. From the 6th Century, the original monastery was located on Saints Island.
The traditional three-day pilgrimage now continues on Station Island across 10 weeks each summer, from June to mid-August.
The programme includes living elements from the spirituality of the Celtic monastic tradition, including bodily prayer, fasting, vigil, and vocal prayer.
In May and in late August through September, day retreat experiences are available.
The Visitor Centre, the Museum and the Pilgrim Path on the lough shore can be accessed all year round.
Directions: Lough Derg is situated about one mile from Pettigo and is well signposted from there. The full address for SatNav directions is: Lough Derg, Pettigo, Co. Donegal, Republic of Ireland, F94 PC60.
