Five Unionist councillors on Fermanagh and Omagh District Council did not support the lighting up of civic buildings to mark Omagh Pride later this month.
Councillors Mark Buchanan (Democratic Unionist Party), Paul Robinson (DUP), David Mahon (DUP), Allan Rainey (Ulster Unionist) and Victor Warrington (UUP) noted their disagreement following a proposal from Sinn Féin Erne East Councillor, Noeleen Hayes.
Councillor Hayes who told the chamber: “As diversity ambassador, I would like to make a proposal to light the council buildings in honour of pride month and I would like to suggest the date of June 22 which is the date of Omagh Pride festival.”
She detailed some of the events taking place including the performance of Janet Devlin, a choir as well as host of activities that will take place in the Tyrone town later this month and she flagged the upcoming dates for Fermanagh Pride on September 6 and 7.
Her proposal was backed by Omagh Alliance Parry Councillor Stephen Donnelly.
Democratic Unionist Party Councillor West Tyrone Councillor Mark Buchanan voiced his disagreement and said: “I wouldn’t be agreeing with that, can I record my dissent please with that proposal.
This was followed by a show of hands from Councillors Buchanan, Robinson, Mahon, Rainey and Warrington.
