Businesses are at the beating heart of communities right across Fermanagh and it is only right that they are recognised as pillars of the community, just as they will be at The Impartial Reporter Community Champion awards, in association with Encirc.

One such pillar is Rooney’s Gift Store in Belleek. The family-run business has helped raise awareness of domestic violence through its work with Women’s Aid, and helped rally the businesses of Belleek last year to raise more than £10,000 in support of Fermanagh Women’s Aid.

The shop is an institution in the Border village of Belleek and is now in the hands of Michelle Gallagher (née Rooney) who along with her small team has made a mark on Belleek and the surrounding area as they celebrate 20 years in business.

Keri Gallagher, who works in the shop alongside her mum, said that the shortlisting for the Business Award, sponsored by Encirc, surprised them.

“We are so grateful for whoever nominated us; we are still in a bit of shock! Nothing we do here is for recognition, but it is really appreciated.”

Part of the recognition by those who nominated Rooney’s Gift Store is for their work fundraising for Fermanagh Women’s Aid.

Keri explained: “The collection was amazing; everyone rallied around and was so supportive of that cause last year.

"We had an information evening on Thursday, June 6 along with Melvin Pharmacy and Women’s Aid Fermanagh, just trying to educate people on the signs and what to look out for if there are women who they think are victims of domestic abuse and coercive control.

“The information evenings are something we are proud of as they are so informative and so powerful.

"Michelle Alonso speaks so well and everyone who leaves from the talks is blown away by the statistics, and in turn talks to their friends, and helps break down barriers and stigmas.

“We are going to try and continue them, as people are sometimes afraid to go to these things because they are worried about what people might think, but they are beneficial.”

The shop has diversified since it began as a paper shop, and is now a paper and gift shop.

Keri explained: “We’ve diversified over the years through all the different ups and downs, Covid-19 and everything. We have gifts, cards, jewellery, everything and anything.”

The shop maintains a popular social media presence, including on Instagram, where it are often found in 'reels', having a bit of craic with customers.

“It makes all the difference in reaching new audiences and connecting with customers and having a bit of craic. It's not all about sales on Instagram, it's about showing people the scenes.”

Also recognised with a short-listed nomination was Michelle Gallagher, who was nominated as Community Champion of the Year, which caused a great shock for everyone.

Her daughter added: “She was not expecting that at all!”

Other businesses shortlisted for the Business Award are Balcas, Charlie’s Bar and Mark Edwards, Enniskillen Taste Experience.
