A FERMANAGH schoolgirl has said she is "chuffed to bits" to be in the running as a Little Champion.

Nine He (9) voices the lead character in the CBeebies programme, 'Yukee', which follows the adventures of a ukulele-playing girl in a magical garden filled with musical animal friends.

She is one of three inspirational young people who have been shortlisted in the Little Champions category of the upcoming Impartial Reporter Community Champion Awards, in association with Encirc.

Nina's category is sponsored by David Mahon Properties and seeks to recognise little people who have done extraordinary things.

Nina's proud mum, Becky He, said the award nomination came as a big surprise.

"Nina is chuffed to bits to be considered as a nominee," she said. "It came as a surprise to us all for sure!

"The whole community of Newtownbutler have been very supportive of her and singing her praises, especially St. Mary's Primary School, Newtownbutler, as they show episodes of Yukee to younger classes!"

Nina voices the character of Yukee, and has delighted young CBeebies viewers across the UK.

And, just like Nina, the character Yukee is of Northern Irish and Chinese heritage.

In this sense, Becky feels that her talented daughter has been a positive influence to other youngsters in Fermanagh and beyond.

"I don't think Nina comprehends how influential she could be, and that kids are looking up to her to be able to achieve their dreams!" she said.

"Especially in rural area like Fermanagh, it's great to have talent to aspire to.

"Nina is witty, confident and strong-willed. She is one to watch. Nina has been stopped a few times and asked for a picture, but she is always happy to do so!

"I also believe that it's brilliant for her to be able to represent her Asian and Irish heritage proudly on screen for many other mixed ethnic minorities that may be watching."

Becky said that while winning the category would be fantastic for Nina, even being shortlisted has been a huge honour.

Going foward, Nina hopes to continue her career in acting and TV.

Becky explained: "We were hoping for another season of Yukee, but haven't heard anything just yet, not all of the episodes are released yet.

"Nina is interested in modelling and TV acting work, and has done a few shoots here and there.

"It has really helped build her confidence in speaking and she enjoys being in front of the camera. It comes naturally to her, as she enjoys entertaining people."
