The doors of Derrylester Post Office have closed for the final time.

The small Post Office which has served the community in Killesher for decades is now closed permanently following the retirement of Post Mistress Delia Quigley.

Mrs. Quigley served the area for 39 years having taken on the Post Office from Alfie and Elizabeth Farlow, previously it had been run by the Crozier family.  Postmistress, Delia Quigley, said: “I have been here for this community through thick and thin, including the pandemic, and I have got to know my customers well. There’s always been a fun atmosphere in the shop. I have loved listening to people’s stories and hearing about their families. I have really enjoyed my time as Postmistress."

The news of Mrs. Quigley's retirement led to an outpouring of well wishes on social media with many Post Office users commenting that she had served Derrylester and the community well and wishing her a long and healthy retirement.

Pupils from St. Mary's Primary School, Killesher made a special presentation to mark Mrs. Quigley’s retirement

Mr Cunningham, the school principal, said: "Our pupils, along with members of the local community, gathered to celebrate this remarkable milestone and to express our deepest gratitude for Delia’s unwavering commitment and service. Her hard work and kindness have touched so many lives over the years.

"Delia's presence at Derrylester Post Office will be greatly missed. We hope someone new will be appointed to the role soon, as the post office provides a vital service in our rural community."

Post Office Area Manager, Sean Doherty paid tribute to Mrs. Quigley and, said: “I want to sincerely thank Delia who has been postmistress for Derrylester for nearly four decades. Despite her poor health and now being less mobile, Delia chose to continue to serve her Post Office customers. I wish her a well-earned retirement.”

Mrs. Quigley plans to spend time with her husband Brendan, children Aaron and Dervla and her “three beautiful grandchildren", Edel, Erin and Oísin.

The nearest alternative Post Offices are at Kinawley and Macken.
