AN ENNISKILLEN sergeant has reaffirmed his commitment to motorcycle safety following startling statistics on biking dangers.
Sergeant Irvine, of Road Policing Interceptors, Enniskillen, has called for increased safety for riders after it was revealed that motorcyclists are 125 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured when involved in a road traffic collision than a car driver.
His call comes after exclusive reports in The Impartial Reporter took an in-depth look at the dangers that motorcyclists face, and the pain and suffering that the loss of loved ones has had on local families.
Tragically, on June 16, a motorcyclist lost his life following a crash on the Dernawilt Road, Rosslea.
“The arrival of better weather traditionally means we see an increase in motorcycles on our roads," Sergeant Irvine said.
“Unlike the occupants of motor vehicles, motorcyclists have very little protection when they crash.
"This makes motorcyclists especially vulnerable to death or serious injury if they come off their bike or are struck by another vehicle.
“Motorcyclists also need to be cognisant of their speed, the weather conditions and other road users.
"If you are taking the bike out for the first time in a while, please ensure your motorcycle and safety equipment are in good working order.
"Junction points are a key area, so please remember to take another look before emerging onto a road."
Sergeant Irvine also called on other road users to behave safely.
"Other road users need to be alert for motorcyclists on the road. Careless driving is one of the most significant causes of collisions.
"Just a moment of inattention can result in a serious crash."
The local sergeant added that efforts have been made in Fermanagh this year to educate riders on the dangers of motorcycles, with a further workshop planned for the coming months.
"Back in March, officers engaged with motorcyclists and their passengers and other road users across Fermanagh to promote motorcycle safety, including carrying out vehicle checkpoints and conducting a number of BikeSafe workshops.
"We had a BikeSafe presence at the Fermanagh Motorcycle Club Show on May 19.
“Officers have a number of planned operations over the summer to focus on motorcycle safety
"We also have a BikeSafe workshop booked for Friday, September 27 at the NIFRS station in Enniskillen. There are still places available on this workshop,” he added.
