AN ENNISKILLEN man who chanted "up the IRA" in front of police has been placed on probation.

Kalem Green (27), of Braeside Park, Enniskillen, appeared at Enniskillen Magistrate's Court yesterday (Wednesday), facing a single charge of disorderly behaviour.

The court heard how on April 21 of this year at around 7.45pm, police on mobile patrol on Belmore Street, Enniskillen, observed Green walking into the town with his arms raised.

Police pulled up beside him and put down their window.

They heard Green chanting "Up the IRA", and swearing. Other members of the public were present at the time.

Green continued to "shout and swear", and then "stuck up his middle finger to police".

Police placed Green under arrest, and the incident was captured on body-worn footage.

Green told officers that he had been at a family gathering and had been drinking.

Green's solicitor said that while the incident was "very short in terms of timeframe", Green "regrets" it.

"The majority of what he said was incoherent, but he accepts that his behaviour is unacceptable," he said. "This is reflected by his early plea of guilty."

A reference from Green's employer was presented to District Judge, Alana McSorley.

Referencing a pre-sentence report, Judge McSorley said that Green has four convictions for disorderly behaviour.

"This is entirely unacceptable", the judge said, imposing a 12-month probation order.
