At the inaugural Impartial Reporter Community Champion Awards, in association with Encirc, one particularly special Fermanagh man was recognised with the inaugural Editor’s Award.

This award was chosen by the newspaper’s Editor, Rodney Edwards, to recognise an individual who contributed to society in Fermanagh and this year, it recognised the late Jonny Gibson.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Edwards: “I am really privileged to recognise an inspiring man tonight.

“A beloved father, husband, brother and friend.

“An accomplished sportsman. He played for Junior Ulster, Dungannon Rugby Football Club, and was a stalwart of Enniskillen Rugby Football Club, serving as captain and coach.

“He was also a founding member of Portora Boat Club and a British Masters Champion.

“In the community, he contributed to helping the lives of others.

“He was an Animal Welfare Officer at Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and he volunteered for Bright Eyes Animal Sanctuary, where he showed his love and empathy towards animals.

“Sadly, the recipient of this award passed away back in April after a heart attack. When he died, there was an outpouring of sadness and grief.

“In the days after his death, his wife, Daphne, and his children, Ariane and Jamie, described him as their teacher, coach, idol and hero.

“Therefore, it is only right that we remember a fine man.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is an honour to recognise the late Johnny Gibson.”

Accepting the award on behalf of the Gibson family was Mr. Gibson’s best friend, Alan Crooks.

He accepted the award from Mr. Edwards to the sound of David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’, as well as the applause of all of those in attendance.
