The JustUs group for adults with disabilities organised their first sports day last month and the event was a major success, according to Shelley Cowan, a committee member for the group.
The first ever JustUs sports day took place on Sunday, June 30 and was a great success for all involved.
Those attending got the opportunity to try out various sports, much to their delight, and were able to learn more about accessible ways to take part in sports.
They were supported by hard-working volunteers from JustUs, as well as volunteers from BT/EE.
Ms. Cowan explained: “A lot of people tried new sports that they probably thought they weren’t able to get involved in, including canoeing.
"One of the attendees said it was ‘a dream come true’, to be able to get on a canoe and she was absolutely ecstatic to be able to get on an accessible bike and have a go on them.
“We had wheelchair users, we had people with mobility issues, all taking part.
“Harry McConkey helped people with football sessions; him and Roisin Henry gave their time to help people with inclusive sports.
“They had a lot of activities and a lot of new experiences all around.
She thanked all of the groups who took part in the activities and paid particular thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund for their support.
Organisations to support people with disabilities were also involved in the day, handing out information. They included representatives from the Consumer Council, the NOW group, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, and others.
Ms. Cowan explained that this had a real benefit for those attending: “There was one lady who was helping with the leaflets, and within five minutes found four things she didn’t know existed for her son.”
The group continue to remain active in the local area. For further information on the JustUs group, see their Facebook page.
