Aisling Centre, Row the Erne, and National Trust Fermanagh have announced a collaborative summer programme of outdoor well-being activities.

The events, which are free to attend and require no previous experience, include yoga, mindfulness meditation, mindful nature walks, and currach rows, all led by qualified and experienced facilitators and crews.

The programme is currently running until September.

Scientific research attests to the mental and physical advantages of spending time outdoors.

A 2021 study by the Mental Health Foundation discovered that being connected to nature plays a crucial role in maintaining good mental health.

Exercise in nature was identified as one of the primary ways to enhance mental well-being.

Other studies have demonstrated that time spent in nature can boost happiness and decrease levels of depression and anxiety.

Aisling Centre service director, Bridie Sweeney, said: "Most well-being programmes stop over the summer.

"We wanted to try in some small way to fill that gap with the added benefit of utilising the healing powers of nature.

"We had 100 per cent positive feedback from last year’s pilot project and are delighted to be offering it again this year.”

Barbara Irwin, representing Row The Erne, said: “Being out on the water is a great way to promote well-being and self-care.

"The rhythmic aspect of rowing is very soothing and therapeutic.

"The activity itself is a great way to exercise, unwind, and forget your cares for a few hours.

"We live in such a wonderful place, but we don’t always notice and appreciate the beauty on our doorstep, and being out on the lough gently reminds us of that."

Three National Trust properties in Fermanagh - Crom, Castle Coole, and Florencecourt - will host the wellness activities.

National Trust Fermanagh's communities officer, Ellie Annon, said: "We're delighted to partner with Aisling Centre on this summer’s well-being programme.

"The well-being workshops and events are a fantastic way for locals to spend time in nature, which is so important for our health and happiness."

Details of activities will be published on the Aisling Centre Facebook page. Interested parties can also email info@theaislingcentre.com, or phone 028 66 325811.
