A permanent National Bikers' Memorial is set to be built in Co. Monaghan.

The bikers' memorial committee announced on August 2 that they have acquired a site for the memorial near Clones.

The site is by the Ulster Canal marina and close and adjacent to all required services.

The committee plans to seek planning permission to develop the area so it becomes a peaceful place of remembrance and reflection.

John James McDonnell, a founding committee member said: "We have been supported from day one by our local authority and its elected councillors.

"It’s hard to express how delighted we are to have such a committed partner in Monaghan Co. Council."

Council support, he believes, puts them in a position to achieve their goal.

Mr. McDonnell said: "The provision of a beautiful, peaceful, reflective place for those suffering the pain of loss, to visit and reminisce of better times with their loved ones."

The proposed memorial will incorporate a sculpture and a biodiversity garden, but retain the open, shared-space aspect of the site.

This means it will remain open to the public all day, every day, year-round.

Committee treasurer Ciaran Myres said that the site is in a perfect location and that it will remain an open space for all visitors and townspeople alike.

His view is that the addition of the memorial will enhance Clones.

The committee has started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the project.

The committee expressed gratitude to those who have already supported this effort and encouraged others to donate if they can.

To further fundraise, they are hosting a Family Fun Day on August 18 from 2pm to 5pm.

The fun day will have activities for both children and adults and everyone in Clones and surrounding towns is welcome to join.
