Fermanagh Musical Theatre (FMT) is breaking down barriers and making live theatre accessible for everyone with their upcoming relaxed performance of 'Shrek The Musical'.

This special performance, designed with inclusivity in mind, will take place at the Ardhowen Theatre, ensuring that audiences of all needs can experience the magic of live theatre.

A 'relaxed performance' is specifically tailored to create a more welcoming environment for individuals who may find traditional theatre settings challenging.

This includes people with autism, sensory and communication disorders, learning disabilities, or anyone who might benefit from a less formal atmosphere.

As such, FMT's upcoming performance of 'Shrek The Musical' will feature adjustments such as reduced lighting effects and sound levels, a more relaxed attitude towards noise and movement in the audience, and a designated quiet space for those who need a break.

Live theatre has the power to entertain, educate, and inspire, but it hasn’t always been accessible to everyone.

By offering a relaxed performance, FMT is sending a strong message that theatre is for everyone.

Nadia Stenson, the Chairperson of FMT, emphasised the significance of these inclusive efforts.

She said: “We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy of live theatre.

"By offering a relaxed performance, we’re not just putting on a show - we’re opening the doors of the theatre to people who may have previously felt excluded.”

FMT will begin their performance run of Shrek the Musical from this Thursday, August 15 with performances taking place on August 16, 17, 21, 22, 23 and 24.

'Shrek The Musical' brings the beloved DreamWorks film to life on stage, complete with all the humour, heart, and hijinks that made the original a family favourite.

The story follows Shrek, a grumpy but lovable ogre, who lives a solitary life in his swamp.

However, his peace is shattered when a group of fairytale creatures, banished from the kingdom of Duloc by the evil Lord Farquaad, invade his home.

In an effort to reclaim his swamp, Shrek strikes a deal with Lord Farquaad: he will rescue Princess Fiona, who is trapped in a tower guarded by a fire-breathing dragon, in exchange for the deed to his swamp.

Along the way, Shrek is joined by his loyal companion, Donkey, and together they embark on an adventure filled with unexpected friendships, romance, and a lot of laughter.

As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Fiona is hiding a secret of her own, and Shrek learns that true love and acceptance come in all shapes and sizes.

The relaxed performance of 'Shrek The Musical' is more than just a show, it’s an invitation to the entire community to come together and enjoy the arts in a way that is comfortable for all.

For families with children who have special needs, this performance provides a rare opportunity to experience live theatre in an environment where they don’t have to worry about strict etiquette or sensory overload.

FMT will also have a BSL interpreter present throughout the performance.

“We want to make sure that no one is left out of the magic of live theatre,” said Moya Sweeney, Musical Director. “It’s about creating a space where everyone feels welcome and included.”

So whether you’re a long-time fan of Shrek, or are new to the story, this relaxed performance promises to be a delightful experience for all ages.

Tickets for all performances and the relaxed performance are now available through the Ardhowen Theatre’s box office.
