There has been much sadness following the death of Fintona country music star Derrick Mehaffey.

The renowned singer, who was frontman of the successful group 'Derrick and the Sounds', passed away on Monday, August 26, aged 78.

The musician was named Male Vocalist of the Year at the 1999 European Country Music Awards, and later attended the Chattanoogs Pedal Steel Guitar Festival at the invite of Nashville record producer Mike Headrick.

Online tributes have been paid to the late country star. 

Country singer, Mike Denver, said he was "saddened" to hear of Mr. Mehaffey's passing. 

"Saddened to hear of the sudden loss of Derrick Mehaffey today," Mr. Denver said. 

"Derrick was lead singer with Willie, my manager, and the Conquerors in the 70s.

"I met Derrick numerous times with Willie and in particular at Jamboree in the Park, Fintona, when I performed there. 

"Rest in Peace Derrick."

Daniel O'Donnell described the late Mr. Mehaffey as a "true gentleman."

"I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Derrick Mehaffey," Mr. O'Donnell said. 

"A true gentleman. My deepest sympathy to his wife Shirley and his extended family at this sad time."

Meanwhile, a spokesman from the Strule Arts Centre said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Derrick Mehaffey, one of the most popular figures in country music. 

"Derrick took time to contribute to the permanent Showbands Exhibition here in Strule Arts Centre that highlights the golden era of showbands.

"Derrick rose to fame with 'Derrick and the Sounds', becoming a household name in the 1960s and 70s. The bands performances captivated audiences across Ireland and beyond, including tours in Canada and Germany. 

"Derrick's remarkable talent earned him the title of Male Vocalist of the Year at the European Country Music Awards in 1999.

"Our thoughts are with his wife Shirley, and his family and friends during this difficult time."
