AN "habitual offender" who was wanted for a theft in the Clogher area has been arrested on the M1.

At around 11pm last night (Thursday), the man was apprehended by police on the motorway.

The man, who was driving a BMW, is currently serving a seven-year driving disqualification, as well as a suspended sentence for motoring offences.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Road Policing Interceptors from Sprucefield, assisted by RPU officers from Mahon Road, stopped this BMW on the M1 motorway this evening using pre-emptive tactics to prevent the likelihood of a pursuit.

"The driver - who is currently serving a seven-year period of disqualification - was arrested in relation to theft in the Clogher area, two further counts of driving whilst disqualified, and two counts of no insurance.

"The male driver is currently on court bail, pending appeal, and a suspended sentence for similar motoring offences."

The spokesman continued: "Habitual offenders like this pose a huge risk to the public and we will continue to tackle these people and bring them to justice.

"The owner and insured party, who was in the passenger seat, has been reported for two counts of permitting no insurance."
