WHEN people think of apprenticeship, they may think of construction, plumbing and electrics; but how about outdoor activities and watersports?

Those at the Lisnaskea-based Share Discovery Centre have teamed up with South West College (SWC) to offer the exciting new apprenticeship programme, which offers people of all ages the chance to turn their passion for sport and the outdoors into a rewarding career.

The paid opportunity will see participants based at the Share Centre on Lough Erne, where they will learn all there is to know about outdoor pursuits including paddle boarding, kayaking, archery and canoeing.

They will also benefit from the assistance of a dedicated tutor from the local college, and develop all-important skills including team building, customer service, timekeeping and communication.

Darragh Collins, Chief Executive of the Share Centre, called it "an apprenticeship with a difference".

"When people think about apprenticeships, they think about plumbing, electrical or construction, but this is much broader than that," Mr. Collins said.

"Overall, this is a great way for people to get into the industry where they are able to learn on the job, all while having the backing of SWC tutors and ongoing support."

While at the Share Centre, apprentices will work toward a Level 2 in Active Leisure, Learning and Wellbeing Operational Services, gaining skills that are valued by a many employers near and far.

"There are lots of opportunities and apprentices will gain numerous transferable skills", Mr. Collins said.

"It's basically an outdoor education, which will see apprentices getting out onto the water and land, learning as they go, all while getting a nationally recognised qualification."

Mr. Collins added that the new apprenticeship is similar to a scheme that once operated at the Share Centre pre-Covid.

Mr. Collins himself completed this programme, and explained that other 'Share alumni' have went on to a range of diverse roles.

Some, he said, have become directors at education and training centres in Ireland, while another is running an outdoor activity centre in Thailand.

The opportunity is open to anyone aged 16 and above who has an interest in leisure and outdoor pursuits.

Speaking on the apprenticeship, a spokesman from South West College said: "We're thrilled to launch this innovative Sport and Outdoor Pursuits Apprenticeship in collaboration with the Share Centre.

"This program offers a unique blend of hands-on experience and academic study, with a blend of college study and the rest of the time spent developing real-world skills on the job.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for individuals of all ages to turn their passion for sport and the outdoors into a rewarding career."
